Self-Employed Occupation Permit
The Self-Employed Occupation Permit is ideal if you want to settle in a tropical jurisdiction with reliable telecommunications networks. In addition to the opportunity to lead an active lifestyle, it also offers you the chance to provide professional services to local and international clients. Are you ready to work on our beautiful beaches?
However, the Self-Employed Permit will only be issued to you if you are a consultant or freelancer. For professional activities that do not fall under this category, the Investor Residence Permit is the most appropriate.

Eligibility Criteria:
To apply for a Self-Employed Occupation Permit, valid for 10 years and renewable thereafter, you must meet the following requirements:
- Make an initial investment of USD 50,000 (or equivalent in freely convertible currency) in a Mauritian bank account, with proof via a certified bank statement and a written commitment to transfer the funds within 60 days of permit issuance.
- Provide at least 3 letters of intent, including 2 from potential local clients.
- Generate a minimum business income of 750,000 MUR from the first year, with a cumulative target of 6 million MUR by year 5. For renewal from year 6 onwards, the annual business income must reach 1.5 million MUR.
- Employment rules: the permit holder may hire one local administrative staff member.
Family and Dependents
Permit holders can apply for a Residence Permit for Dependents for their spouse (including opposite-sex de facto partners), parents, and children (including stepchildren or legally adopted children), provided they are unmarried and do not engage in any paid employment. The dependent permit duration matches that of the principal permit holder.
Additional Information
- Applications can be submitted entirely online via the National Electronic Licensing System (NELS).

- The Self-Employed Permit is intended for professionals operating a one-person business activity. However, recruitment of non-administrative staff is allowed.
- NELS applications are free; only the statutory fees prescribed by law are payable to the Mauritian government upon approval.
